African Cultur Awards 2001


Who takes the Grand Prix at the first Dapamda Africa Culture Awards 2001? This was one question running through the minds of African cultural enthusiasts in Denmark. On Saturday, February 3 and the answer was sorted out at Nørre Alle Medborghus at Sankt Hans Torv in Norrebro, when personalities and organisations promoting African culture in Denmark gathered there to receive the due acknowledgements, to climax Dapamda's Africa Cultural week that was held in Copenhagen, Arhus and Helsingør from January 20th to February 3rd 2001.



Awards went to individuals and organisations who were active in the fields of Traditional African music, Modern African Music, African theatre and Drama, African Art, African Fashion, African Literature and African Films among other African art forms. The cultural week opened with an exhibition of African art in DCCD on January 20, 2001 followed by an arrangement for children where the Ghanaian-born danser/drummer, Sellasi Dewornu entertained.

On Sunday, January 21 at Mellemfolke Samvirke on Landgreven 7, 2sal in Kbh at 14.30 African women hairstylists in Denmark demonstrated their skills in a hair styling competition and the audience were the judges who decide the best hair style. The winner received special prize. On Sunday, January 27 at the same venue, (Mellemfolke Samvirke) Dido Lusamba from Congo had a workshop for children where he demonstrate arts work with saw dust and paint. The programme contined on January 31st 2001 at the International People's High College in Helsingør with a seminar that discussed "the Globalisation of African Culture and its Impact in the Western World". Helle Toft Jensen from SPOR show her film " On-line with the ancestors" at Mellemfolk Samvirke at Landgreven 7, 2 sal in Kbh. Signe from the same organization traveled to show the same film in Mellemfolk Samvirke in Århus.
